Swanage started off as a fishing town and port, and the sea continues to play an important part in the economy and life of the town. One oft he landmarks of Swanage is Swanage Pier, which dates from the 1800's and was refurbished in 1999. The bay has numerous moorings for boats, and is popular with those wanting to go scuba diving, fishing and sailing around the South Coast. The bay is very po pular as a training ground for scuba diving as it is shallow and sheltered. The dive shop on the end of the pier was the first to open in the UK, and regular diving schools are run from here. Often boats from Poole will pass Studland Beach and come to Swa nage for the day.
Swanage is sometimes considered the gateway to the Jurassic Coast. This is a World Heritage Site that starts at Old Harry Rocks just east of Swanage, and continues west for about 90 miles down the southern coast of Englandt o Orcombe Point near Exmouth in East Devon. The whole length can be walked along the South West Coast Path, and Swanage is a popular base for people walking along the coast and exploring the fossil beds found in the coves around. The Dancing Ledges nearSw anage are a very popular spot well known for the jets of water created by the action of the waves against the rocks.
Swanage is also the home of The Swanage Railway. This volunteer-run heritage railway runs between Swanage and Corfe Castle, a nd is a popular tourist attraction as it uses steam locomotives, making Corfe Castle easily accessible in a unique and attractive manner. Everyone loves a steam train. There are plenty of other attractions around Swanage as well, such as Durleston Country Park and The Coach House Museum. Other nearby beaches include Studland Beach, Kimmeridge and Lulworth Cove (with the famous Fossil Forest and Durdle Door). A little further afield to the west is Weymouth, Portland Bill and Chesil Beach.
